This song was born when Mike Posner was hanging out with his pal Matthew "Blackbear" Musto, who played guitar and Posner started to sing over the melody. The original lyric was "Inside of your bedroom, no one has to know" but Posner re-worked it later to be "If I was your boyfriend...".

This song was announced by Justin Bieber on the 1st of March 2012 (his 18th birthday) when he appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He said this song would be the first single from his third album "Believe". A snippet of the song was also previewed on the show.

American songwriter Mike Posner, the co-author of this song, explained that Justin Bieber rapped "a little eight bars" and offered some "crazy" singing afterwards on the track and added, "That was our whole goal, was to make something that was hater-proof."

Model and actress Rachel Barnes played in the music video for this song. Justin said to MTV News about her casting, "...she was really beautiful and on camera it was this cool vibe. She looked kind of like Pocahontas."
